What Documents Do You Need When Buying a Used Car?

Buying a used car involves more than just handing over money and driving away. There is important paperwork that proves ownership, confirms the vehicle's history, and protects both buyer and seller. Here is what you need to look for.

V5C Logbook

The V5C logbook is the most important document. It proves who the registered keeper is and contains the vehicle details including make, model, colour, engine size, and VIN. Check that the logbook is in the seller's name and that the address matches their current address. If the seller claims they have lost the V5C, be very cautious. They should apply for a replacement before selling the car.

MOT Certificate

While you can check MOT history online, having the paper MOT certificates for recent years gives you a physical record. Look at the mileage on each certificate to see if the car has been driven consistently. For cars over three years old, there must be a valid MOT in place at the time of sale unless you are buying it as a non-runner. Dealers will usually provide a fresh MOT as part of the sale.

Service History

A full service history with stamps and receipts adds significant value to a used car. It shows the car has been properly maintained and reduces your risk of buying a neglected vehicle. Look for services at the correct intervals and check that the mileage on each service matches the timeline. A car with full dealer history is the best, but a thorough independent garage history is still very good.

Receipts for Work Done

Even without a stamped service book, a folder of receipts for parts and labour is valuable evidence of maintenance. Receipts for major items like timing belt changes, clutches, and suspension work show the car has been looked after. Finance Check

Always check that the car has no outstanding finance before you buy it. If you buy a car with finance owing, the finance company can repossess it and you lose your money. Use the government's online vehicle checker or a service like HPI Check to confirm the car is finance-free. This is especially important for private sales, where there is less protection than buying from a dealer.

Bill of Sale

Always get a written receipt when buying a used car. It should include the date, price, registration number, and both parties' names and addresses. This protects you if there is any dispute later about the terms of the sale.
