The petrol versus diesel debate has changed dramatically in recent years. With ULEZ zones expanding, fuel prices fluctuating, and diesel becoming increasingly restricted in cities, the choice is no longer straightforward. Here is what you need to know.

Petrol Engines: Pros and Cons

Petrol cars are generally cheaper to buy used, especially at the budget end of the market. They are quieter, smoother, and rev more freely than diesels. Petrol engines are also simpler and cheaper to repair when something goes wrong. They do not have the complex emission systems that modern diesels need. The downsides are higher fuel consumption, especially on motorway journeys, and higher CO2 emissions. For short journeys and town driving, petrol is the better choice.

Diesel Engines: Pros and Cons

Diesel cars offer significantly better fuel economy on longer journeys, often achieving 50 to 70 miles per gallon on the motorway. They produce more torque, which makes them feel more relaxed at motorway speeds. However, older diesels are increasingly restricted by ULEZ and clean air zones in cities like London, Birmingham, and Bristol. Modern diesels have complex DPF, EGR, and AdBlue systems that can fail and are expensive to repair. Diesels are best suited to high-mileage drivers who spend most of their time on A-roads and motorways.

Running Costs Comparison

Diesel fuel has historically been more expensive than petrol at the pump, though the gap has narrowed. Diesel cars generally cost more in vehicle tax, especially older models with higher emissions. Servicing costs are typically higher for diesels because they need more oil and have additional filters. For a driver covering 20,000 miles per year on motorways, a diesel still makes financial sense. For 10,000 miles per year of mixed driving, a petrol car is usually cheaper overall.

ULEZ and Clean Air Zones

This is the biggest factor for many buyers. Older diesel cars, particularly those manufactured before 2015, may not meet Euro 6 emission standards and face daily charges in clean air zones. Check whether any car you are considering is ULEZ-compliant before you buy, especially if you live in or near a city. Many petrol cars from 2005 onwards are ULEZ-compliant, making them a safer choice for urban drivers.

Which Cars Are Most Reliable?

Both fuel types can be reliable if properly maintained. Some of the most reliable petrol engines include the Ford Duratec, Vauxhall 1.2 and 1.4 petrols, and the Toyota VVT-i range. Good diesel engines include the Volkswagen 1.9 TDI, BMW 2.0 diesel, and Ford 1.8 TDDi. Avoid high-mileage diesels with no service history, as expensive repairs can make them uneconomical.
