What to Do After Buying a Used Car

You have bought your used car and driven it home. Now what? The first few days and weeks of ownership are crucial for making sure your new vehicle is safe, reliable, and properly set up. Here is a checklist of what to do after buying a used car.

Sort the Paperwork

If you bought from a private seller, you need to tax the car immediately using the new keeper slip from the V5C. You can do this online or at the Post Office. The seller should have sent the V5C to the DVLA. If they did not, you can apply for a V62 form to get the logbook in your name. Make sure your insurance is in place before you drive anywhere.

Check All Fluids

Open the bonnet and check the engine oil level, coolant level, brake fluid level, and screen wash. Top up anything that is low. If the oil looks black or old, plan to change it as soon as possible. If the coolant looks rusty or discoloured, it may need flushing and replacing. Low brake fluid could indicate worn brake pads or a leak.

Change the Oil and Filter

Even if the seller says the oil was changed recently, it is good practice to change the oil and filter yourself when you buy a used car. This gives you a known baseline for future servicing. Inspect the Tyres

Check the tread depth on all four tyres, including the spare if there is one. The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm, but 3mm is recommended for safety in wet conditions. Check the tyre pressures and adjust them to the manufacturer's recommendation. Look at the sidewalls for cracks or bulges, which are a safety risk. If the tyres are unevenly worn, the car may need tracking.

Check the Brakes

Listen for any squealing or grinding when you apply the brakes. If the pedal feels spongy, the brake fluid may need bleeding or there could be air in the system. Check the brake disc condition through the wheel spokes: if the discs are heavily lipped or scored, they will need replacement soon.

Inspect the Belts and Hoses

Check the condition of the auxiliary belt (drive belt) and any visible hoses. Look for cracks, glazing, or fraying on the belt. Squeeze the hoses to check they are firm but not rock hard or soft and spongy. A failed belt or burst hose can leave you stranded.

Give It a Thorough Clean

A deep clean inside and out lets you inspect the car properly. You will notice any hidden damage, damp patches, or issues you missed when viewing. Clean the interior thoroughly and check under the carpets for any signs of water ingress.
