Warranties on used cars can be confusing. Some dealers offer comprehensive cover, others give minimal protection, and private sales come with no warranty at all. Here is what you need to know about used car warranties and whether they are worth paying for.
When you buy from a dealer, you are protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 regardless of whether the car comes with a warranty. The car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. If it develops a fault within 30 days, you can reject it for a full refund. From 30 days to six months, the dealer must repair or replace the car. After six months, you still have rights, but the burden of proof shifts to you to show the fault existed at the time of sale. These rights are valuable and cost nothing extra.
Most reputable dealers offer a warranty on used cars, typically lasting 3, 6, or 12 months. These warranties usually cover major mechanical components like the engine, gearbox, and drivetrain. They often exclude wear and tear items such as tyres, brake pads, clutches, and exhausts. Some warranties also exclude cosmetic items like paintwork, trim, and upholstery. Always read the terms and conditions carefully before accepting a warranty. Some warranties require you to use approved repairers, which may not be local to you.
You can buy extended warranties from third-party providers to cover the car after the dealer's warranty expires. These cost anything from £200 to £600 per year depending on the car's age, mileage, and value. Extended warranties can provide peace of mind, especially for complex modern cars with expensive electronics. However, they often have strict terms, high excesses, and exclusions for common failures. Read the small print carefully before buying.
When you buy privately, there is no warranty and very limited legal protection. The car is sold as seen, and the seller has no obligation to fix any problems that arise after the sale. The only exception is if the seller misrepresented the car, for example by lying about its history or condition. This is why private sale prices are lower, you are taking on the risk of potential repairs.
For a cheap car under £2,000, a warranty is rarely worth the cost because the premium is high relative to the car's value. For cars between £2,000 and £10,000, a dealer warranty adds useful protection, especially if you are not confident assessing cars yourself. For expensive cars over £10,000, a comprehensive warranty is probably a good investment if it covers the major systems.
Keep all service records and follow the manufacturer's service schedule. If the warranty requires services at a specific garage, make sure you comply. Document any faults promptly and in writing. If a claim is rejected, ask for the reason in writing and challenge it if you believe the rejection is unfair.
