Red Flags to Watch For When Buying a Used Car

Not all used cars are what they seem. Some sellers go to great lengths to hide problems, and knowing the red flags can save you from buying a car that will cost you thousands in repairs. Here are the warning signs to watch out for.

Mismatched Paint

Walk around the car and look at the paint colour from different angles. If one panel is a slightly different shade, the car has been resprayed. This could be because of accident damage, and if the repair was done cheaply, there may be hidden structural damage underneath. Check the panel gaps too: if they are uneven or wider on one side, the panel may not have been fitted properly after repair. Use a paint depth gauge if you have one, or just feel for overspray on rubber seals and trim.

Fresh Underseal

A car that has been freshly undersealed is one of the biggest red flags. Underseal is often applied to hide rust and corrosion underneath the car. If the underside looks thickly coated with black underseal, especially in patches, the seller is likely hiding something. Check the sills, floor pan, and suspension mounting points carefully. Poke suspicious areas gently with a screwdriver to check for rot underneath.

Vague or Missing Service History

A seller who is vague about the service history or says the book is lost is probably hiding a lack of maintenance. A car with no service history is a gamble at any price. If the seller claims the car has been serviced but cannot show any receipts or stamps, be very cautious. A well-maintained car has paperwork to prove it.

Seller Reluctance

If the seller is reluctant to let you inspect the car properly, take a test drive, or have it checked by a mechanic, walk away. A genuine seller has nothing to hide and will encourage you to look the car over thoroughly. If they rush you, make excuses, or seem evasive about the car's history, there is probably something wrong.

Unusually Low Price

If a car is priced significantly below similar examples, there is a reason. It might have a mechanical fault, a hidden accident history, outstanding finance, or a problem with the paperwork. The old saying holds true: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Do not let a bargain price blind you to potential problems.

Multiple Previous Owners

While some cars with many owners are perfectly fine, a car that has had six or seven owners in a short time is suspicious. It suggests that previous owners found something wrong with it and got rid of it quickly. Check the number of previous owners on the V5C and compare it with the car's age. A 10-year-old car with six owners is not necessarily a problem, but a three-year-old car with five owners is a red flag.

Dashboard Warning Lights Not Working

When you turn the ignition on, all the warning lights should illuminate briefly and then go out. If the airbag light or engine management light does not come on at all, the seller may have removed the bulb to hide a fault. This is a common trick and a serious sign of dishonesty.
