Buying a car for under £1000 is still very possible in today's market, but you need to know what to look for and what to expect at this price point. While you will not get a low-mileage modern car for a grand, you can still find reliable transport if you choose wisely.
The Ford Focus is one of the best handling family cars ever made, and the Mk2 can still be found under £1000. Look for the 1.6 or 1.8 petrol models, which are generally reliable. The 1.6 TDCi diesel is also good if you do motorway miles. Common issues include rust on the rear wheel arches and the handbrake mechanism seizing. Parts are cheap and widely available, and at TRD Moters we stock plenty of Focus components including suspension arms, brake discs, and body panels.
The Corsa D is a popular first car for good reason. Running costs are low, parts are everywhere, and they are reasonably simple to work on. The 1.2 petrol is the most common and can be picked up for £500 to £1000. Watch for rust on the rear chassis legs and the timing chain on earlier models. The Corsa is one of the cars we see most often at our Newport workshop, and we keep a good stock of Corsa parts.
The Fiesta is Britain's best-selling car for good reason. It is cheap to insure, cheap to run, and cheap to repair. The 1.25 and 1.4 petrol engines are tough, though the 1.4 diesel can have injector issues. Check for rust in the rear arches and around the tailgate handle. A decent Fiesta can still be found for £600 to £1000.
The Fabia is basically a Volkswagen Polo underneath but often costs less. The 1.4 16v petrol is a good engine, and the 1.9 SDI diesel is famously reliable if slow. Check for electrical issues and worn suspension bushes. The Fabia is a great budget buy with strong build quality.
Cars under £1000 will typically be over 15 years old with over 100,000 miles. They will have some cosmetic issues and may need mechanical attention. Budget for an oil change, new tyres if needed, and a thorough service after purchase. Always check MOT history before viewing and be prepared to walk away if the car does not feel right.
