Selling Body Panels: A Complete Guide

Body panels are one of the most commonly sought-after categories of used car parts. Whether it is a door after a car park incident, a wing after a collision, or a bonnet with a damaged latch, body panels are in constant demand. If you have body panels to sell, getting the details right makes the difference between a quick sale and a panel that sits on your shelf for months.

The single most important detail for any body panel is the colour code. Every vehicle has a paint code, usually found on a sticker in the door shut, under the bonnet, or in the service book. This code identifies the exact colour and variant. Two cars of the same model and colour name can have different paint codes if they were built in different years or factories. A panel in the correct colour is worth significantly more than one that needs repainting.

Describe the condition accurately. Grade the panel as mint, excellent, good, fair, or poor. Be specific about any dents, scratches, rust, or corrosion. A small dent that can be removed with paintless dent removal is less serious than a crease that requires filler and repainting. Surface rust that can be sanded off is different from corrosion that has eaten through the metal. Buyers appreciate detailed honesty.

Identify the panel correctly. A door from a five-door hatchback is different from the same model in a three-door version. A wing for a pre-facelift model may not fit the facelift version. Headlights, tail lights, bumpers, and grilles vary between trim levels and model years. Include the vehicle's registration plate, VIN, or model code to help buyers confirm compatibility.

Trim level matters. A sport model may have different bumpers, side skirts, or grilles compared to the base version. High-spec models often have different headlights (xenon or LED versus halogen), different mirrors, and different trim pieces. If the panel came from an ST, M Sport, S-Line, or VXR model, say so — these parts are often more valuable.

Photograph body panels in good lighting to show the true colour. Take a photo of the colour code sticker. Photograph any damage clearly — zoom in on scratches, dents, and rust spots. A panel photographed square-on shows the colour accurately, while angled shots reveal surface imperfections. If the panel is dirty, wash it first. Clean panels photograph better and give buyers confidence.
