When a car reaches the end of its life, many owners simply send it to the scrapyard and take whatever scrap value is offered. However, with a bit of effort, you can significantly increase your returns by removing and selling valuable parts before scrapping the shell. The difference between scrap value and the total value of parts sold individually can be thousands of pounds for the right vehicle.

The first components to consider removing are the engine and gearbox. These are the most valuable items on any vehicle. Even a high-mileage engine has value if it runs well and has been maintained. Gearboxes are also in strong demand. Label everything as you remove it, keeping nuts, bolts, and brackets together in bags. This makes selling easier because you can offer a complete package.

Catalytic converters contain precious metals and can be valuable even when worn. DPF filters are also sought after. Exhaust systems in good condition sell well, particularly stainless steel systems and OEM units from popular models. Remove the exhaust in sections if possible to make it easier to store and transport.

Body panels in good condition are worth removing. Doors, bonnets, boot lids, and wings that are rust-free and in a popular colour will sell quickly. Bumpers, grilles, headlights, and tail lights are also in demand — remove them carefully to avoid damage. Even interior trim pieces have value, particularly from higher-spec models with desirable options like heated seats, sat-nav, or premium sound systems.

ECUs, ABS pumps, and other electronic modules are increasingly valuable as modern cars become more computer-controlled. These parts can be expensive to buy new, so used units in working condition sell well. Label each electronic module with the vehicle registration and part number so buyers can confirm compatibility.

Alternators, starter motors, power steering pumps, air conditioning compressors, and water pumps are all relatively easy to remove and sell. These are common failure items that people are always searching for. Brake calipers, particularly from performance models, also have good resale value if they are in good condition and not seized.

Once you have removed all the valuable parts, the remaining shell can be sent for scrap. You have already recovered the value of the parts, so the scrap money is a bonus. Before scrapping, ensure you have completed a DVLA notification of vehicle destruction and cancelled the car tax and insurance.
